Computer scientist and technology forecaster Ray Kurzweil is one of the most prominent visionaries of the future. Using the concept of exponential technological development, he argues that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon surpass human intelligence, marking the beginning of the technological singularity.
Scientist’s predictions
According to R. Kurzweil, around 2029, computers will have human-level general AI capabilities, i.e., they will be able to think, solve problems, and learn in the same way as humans.
Meanwhile, there are 19 years left until the widely known hypothetical event. By 2045, full singularity will be achieved – AI will not only surpass human capabilities, but will also become a completely integral part of life.
In making these speculations, the scientist relies on the concept of exponential change, which states that technological development does not occur linearly, but rather at an ever-increasing pace, ultimately leading to abrupt breakthroughs.
What will the singularity look like?
The futurist is convinced that his idea is not just a fictional scenario, and what we will see can already be discussed. The man distinguishes that one of the consequences of the implementation of the singularity will be related to micro-nano robots. These are extremely small robotic particles that will be introduced into the human brain or body through capillaries.
Brain function and interaction with AI will also improve. A “human-machine symbiosis” will occur – technology will not be separated from society, and each person will be able to directly use AI with their thoughts.
Criticism of bold ideas
However, not everyone is optimistic about Kurzweil’s ideas. Many scientists point out that while AI is developing rapidly, progress towards the singularity is likely to take much longer. In addition, many challenges remain related to controlling AI, ethical access to the technology, and changes in human identity.
But proponents say that by surpassing the human mind, technology will allow us to solve complex global challenges, for example, opening up new possibilities in treating diseases or managing climate change.
Since 1999, the scientist has been boldly speaking about his vision, which has changed over time. In 2024, R. Kurzweil published the book “The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI”, confirming the latest prediction for achieving the singularity in society.
International organizations have been increasingly vocal in recent years about the accelerating progress of AI and both its opportunities and potential threats. Recently, the symbolic “Doomsday” clock was turned to an unprecedented midnight. One of the reasons for this is the threat of AI.
