A small business owner in the UK is facing legal action after a customer used industrial engineering to manipulate an AI chatbot into offering a big discount. The AI assistant was originally designed solely to browse the website and collect contact information outside of business hours.
The incident occurred after a user chatted with the bot for about an hour, asking it to solve math problems and calculate percentages on a theoretical order. In an attempt to impress the user, the AI generated a 25% discount code, which was increased to 80% during the conversation. The user took advantage of the generated offer and placed a real order worth over £8,000.
The business owner canceled the delivery and refunded the money because fulfilling the order would have resulted in losses exceeding the cost of the materials. In response, the buyer stated that he intended to take legal action if the store failed to fulfill its obligations.
