Android Authority reported that Google is developing a new advanced face unlock system that doesn’t require the many complex cameras and sensors found in iPhones.

The system, codenamed “Project Toscana”, will be used in Pixel smartphones and Chromebooks and will fit into the front camera notch.
The leaker reported that he personally tested the new system on a Pixel smartphone and two Chromebooks with external cameras, and it worked as fast as “Face ID” on an iPhone, regardless of lighting conditions.
Google is believed to be using an IR illuminator built into the smartphone’s display, which is very similar to Samsung’s recently launched “Polar ID”, which authenticates your face by scanning the light reflected off your face. The publication previously reported that Google is planning to integrate an IR camera into the Pixel 11.
Google previously introduced full-fledged facial recognition on the Pixel 4, which used a complex 3D camera system that took up a lot of space on the smartphone.
The company later abandoned this system in favor of recognition using the front-facing camera, improved by machine learning.
Google says the technology is secure enough to log in to banking apps; however, it becomes practically useless in the dark.
