OpenAI is building a new large language model, codenamed “Garlic”, in an attempt to take on Google’s AI gains in the race. Last week, OpenAI’s chief research officer, Mark Chen, told colleagues about the new model, which performed exceptionally well in the company’s evaluations.

OpenAI plans to release a version of Garlic as soon as possible, which may be released as GPT-5.2 or GPT-5.5 by early next year, the report added.
The news comes amid Google’s success with the launch of its new AI model, Gemini 3. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly declared a “code red” effort to improve the quality of ChatGPT as competition in the AI race heats up.
“Our focus now is to keep making ChatGPT more capable, continue growing, and expand access around the world – while making it feel even more intuitive and personal,” – Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, posted on X.
Altman also called for a temporary relocation of teams and said that OpenAI will hold daily calls with employees working on improving ChatGPT.
Other companies are catching up with ChatGPT, narrowing the three-year-old chatbot’s lead in the artificial intelligence race.
Another AI rival, Anthropic, is reportedly set to turn a profit much sooner than OpenAI. Anthropic expects to break even for the first time in 2028, while OpenAI aims for 2030.
