After months of speculation, OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT’s long-rumored adult mode is set to launch in early 2026, with a release window of January to March. The feature was first hinted at in 2025 by then-CEO Sam Altman, but the company slowed its rollout due to internal discussions about mental health risks and the need for stronger safeguards.

This timeline was reaffirmed by OpenAI Program Manager Fidji Simo, who tied the deployment to broader platform development following the release of GPT-5.2. The update focused on faster reasoning, improved reliability, and more robust professional tools, laying the foundation for a more ambitious next phase.
Adult Mode marks a clear change in how ChatGPT handles adult content. Once enabled, verified users will be able to engage in adult stories, erotica, and conversations that go beyond the platform’s long-standing safe boundaries. For users who have felt constrained by these boundaries, this change could significantly expand the creative possibilities of the tool.
OpenAI stressed that access will be tightly controlled. Adult Mode will only be available to users who pass age verification checks using artificial intelligence-based age determination, government-issued ID, and selfie verification. The system is being developed in partnership with third-party identity provider “Persona”, and OpenAI says it needs additional time to test its reliability after criticism of similar tools used elsewhere.
The timing is also noteworthy. Adult Mode comes after a turbulent period at OpenAI, with leadership changes and internal tensions. With GPT-5.2 heralded as a stabilizing step, Adult Mode now looks like part of a broader effort to rethink how open conversational AI can be, while also setting firm boundaries for accountability. Where should that balance be drawn?
