‘American Girl’ revives historical dolls for 40th anniversary
The "American Girl" historical characters 40th anniversary collection will be available online and in stores beginning April 7th
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, American Girl has reintroduced the original Historical Characters collection, reviving the collection that commemorates its 1986 debut. The collection, released Tuesday, features eight familiar names, including Samantha Parkington, Molly McIntire, Kirsten Larson, Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker, and Josefina Montoya, with Kaya and Kit Kittredge joining later.

The new releases have stayed true to the previous versions. Each doll comes with the recognizable clothing, accessories, and books that were originally intended for them. Even the packaging harks back to the past, recalling the look and feel of the “Pleasant Company” boxes that longtime fans may remember from the late 1980s and 1990s.

From the beginning, American Girl has built its identity around storytelling, pairing dolls with stories set in different historical moments. These stories have introduced younger audiences to topics like immigration, inequality, and social change, often through the eyes of their peers. While the dolls themselves remain rooted in their original form, the company has hinted that their stories will continue to evolve.
