Anne Hathaway sang her first single, ‘Burial,’ for the film ‘Mother Mary’
This is her first-ever synth-pop single.
Anne Hathaway has stepped into the recording booth with a new role that goes beyond acting. The Oscar winner has released a single titled “Burial,” a song that directly ties into her character in the upcoming A24 film “Mother Mary.” The track is Hathaway’s first commercial single and provides a sneak peek at the musical direction of the film.

The song accompanies the dramatic story of a fictional pop icon played by Hathaway, who struggles to navigate fame, identity and complicated relationships while living in the intense, dazzling circles of celebrity culture.
“Burial” is the lead single from the soundtrack album “Mother Mary: Greatest Hits.” Hathaway wrote the song in collaboration with several contemporary pop figures, including Charli XCX, producer Jack Antonoff, and George Daniel of The 1975.
Mother Mary: Greatest Hits List:
01 Holy Spirit
02 Burial
03 My Mouth Is Lonely For You
04 Holy Spirit 2
05 Dark Cradle
06 Blue Flame
07 Cut Ties
Musically, the song exudes a moody synth-pop vibe. The arrangement combines dramatic vocals with layered electronic textures that reflect the uplifting tone of the story. In the project’s promotional videos, Hathaway performs the song as her own character, introducing the fictional artist Mother Mary through stylized stage images and music video-style sequences.
While Hathaway has sung in films before, including her Oscar-winning role in Les Misérables, “Burial” is a different kind of musical release. Rather than being a traditional film number, the track functions as a standalone pop single that ties into the film’s narrative world.
The film itself was directed by David Lowery and explores the intense friendship between Hathaway, a pop star, and her former costume designer, played by Michaela Coel. Supporting actors like Hunter Schafer and FKA Twigs add to the project’s mix of music, fashion, and cinematic drama.
“Mother Mary” is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on April 17, 2026, with a wider release later that month. The soundtrack album is expected to be released on the same day.
