Apple reveals how the new ‘MacBook Neo’ got its name
An Apple executive explained why their new budget laptop is called the "MacBook Neo."
Until a last-minute leak revealed the MacBook Neo name, it was widely assumed that Apple’s cheaper MacBook would simply be called the MacBook. After all, Apple offered the basic MacBook from 2006 to 2012, and then again from 2015 to 2019. Ultimately, Apple chose the MacBook Neo brand, and in a new interview, it explained why.

It turns out, though, that the gemination for the name (though many were considered) is fairly transparent. “We wanted something that felt fun, friendly, fresh, and felt like it really suited the spirit of this product,” said Colleen Novielli, a Mac product marketing director, in conversation with TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff.
Think about it: “Neo” is one letter short of “Neon,” and these colors, especially Citrus and Blush, have the boldness of neon lights. The idea was to come up with a name that exudes youth and energy, similar to the colors of the MacBook Neo, which tend to leave a subtle impression.
The colorful MacBook Neo starts at $599 in the US, and is even lower for students at $499. Available in pink, citrus, indigo, and silver, the MacBook Neo features the iPhone-like A18 Pro chip, a 13-inch display, up to 512GB of storage, and a non-configurable 8GB of RAM.
