Apple x Intel reached an agreement on chip production
The companies last collaborated in 2023.
Last week, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Intel will likely start producing Apple’s M-series chips for Macs and iPads in 2027. Now, another analyst has confirmed that report, adding that Intel-made iPhone chips will likely arrive shortly after that. Intel expects to start producing A-series chips for iPhones starting in 2028.
Bloomberg previously reported that Apple is in talks with several companies to reduce its dependence on TSMC’s production capacity, which still produces almost all of the company’s chips.
Rumors of a potential partnership between Apple and Intel have been circulating for a long time. Analyst Jeff Pu wrote last December that the companies plan to begin jointly producing chips for base iPhone versions in 2028. TSMC, he said, will continue to produce processors for the Pro and Pro Max smartphones.
To be clear, Apple will continue to develop and design its own iPhone chips. However, instead of TSMC manufacturing these chips, Intel would become Apple’s new primary partner.
