Based on initial feedback, this feature will be expanded to all logged-in users worldwide on ChatGPT “Free”, “Go”, “Plus”, and “Pro” plans in the coming days.

It allows users to collaborate with each other and ChatGPT in a single shared conversation. OpenAI says that this launch transforms ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a space where friends, family, or coworkers can communicate and work together to plan, create, and make decisions.
Up to 20 people can be included in a group chat, and the messages between individuals do not count towards the ChatGPT frequency limit.
The company sees group chats on the ChatGPT platform as a way for people to coordinate trips, write documents together, resolve discussions, or conduct research together, and ChatGPT helps them search, summarize, and compare options.
To start a group chat, users need to tap the people icon and add participants, either directly or by sharing a link. Everyone will be asked to set up a short profile with their name, username, and photo.
It’s worth noting that adding someone to an existing chat creates a new conversation, leaving the original chat unchanged.
The move marks the latest step by OpenAI to transform ChatGPT from a simple chatbot into a more social platform. OpenAI says group chats are just the beginning of ChatGPT becoming a collaborative environment rather than a single-player experience.
Group chats use ChatGPT-5.1 Auto. OpenAI also introduced some new tweaks to the way and timing of the chatbot’s responses. It has been trained on new social behavior patterns for group chats and will apparently follow the flow of the conversation, remaining silent, or interjecting based on what is being said.
