As the use of generative AI becomes more widespread, some companies are taking a strong stance on the technology. For example, Netflix and Duolingo are starting to use it, while others are taking a strong opposing view.

It was a statement that felt both defiant and nostalgic – a reminder that in an age of synthetic creativity, DC still wants its heroes, villains, and worlds to come from the hands of humans. This statement was made during the New York Comic Con, where Jim Lee focused on the importance of human involvement in a work of art.

“People have an instinctive reaction to what feels authentic. We recoil from what feels fake. That’s why human creativity matters. AI doesn’t dream. It doesn’t feel. It doesn’t make art. It aggregates it.”

DC is one of the first companies of its kind to take a clear stance on the issue. Marvel has not publicly stated a position on the use of artificial intelligence in its work, and Sony has not commented on its position either.

“Because what we do and why we do it is rooted in our humanity, it is that fragile and beautiful connection between imagination and emotion that fuels our media. The stuff that makes our Universe come alive,” Lee explain.

Lee’s comments come after a year of growing tension between technology and artistic work. Several entertainment industries, from movie studios to comic book publishers, have quietly begun testing AI-assisted workflows in an effort to save time and money. But DC’s decision to explicitly reject the approach is one of the strongest stances yet from a major creative brand.

So fans can rest assured that in Gotham, Metropolis, and elsewhere, the pen – and the shield – will remain firmly in people’s hands.
