Disney drops live-action trailer for ‘Moana’
Films like "The Lion King" and "Aladdin" have previously been brought to the big screen, and "Moana" now joins them.
The ocean is calling again, this time in a live-action format. Disney has released the first full-length trailer for the feature film “Moana,” which gives a clearer look at how the studio plans to reimagine one of its more recent animated stories with a new cast and a different visual approach.

The film, which is set to premiere on July 10, stars Catherine Lagaʻaia, reprising her role as the character who has remained widely recognizable since the 2016 original. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, moving from a voice role to a full-screen role. The trailer continues the familiar story arc: Moana leaves Motunui and travels beyond the reef in an attempt to restore balance to her world.
Directed by Thomas Kail, best known for his work on Hamilton, the adaptation seems to stay true to the original material, albeit with some tweaks to its presentation. The re-imagining features expansive ocean views, detailed costumes, and a slightly more subdued tone to the mythological elements. At the same time, it retains key plot elements, including Moana’s partnership with Maui and the presence of companions like HeiHei and Pua.
Behind the scenes, the project brings together a team from both the original film and Disney’s expanded production plan. Johnson is also listed as a producer, along with Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated version, is an executive producer, and the production team worked with “Pacific Islander” consultants to maintain cultural context and accuracy.
The film comes as part of Disney’s ongoing overhaul of its animated catalog. Set for release on July 10, 2026.
