Google has made its variable brand font, Google Sans Flex, open source, a game-changer for designers and developers alike, plus free for anyone to download and use. Apparently, it is one of the most-served fonts on the internet, with 120 billion font requests a month.

This “variable” font is much more than a standard font – it allows precise control over thickness, width, and optical size. It is designed to adapt to the environment in real time – improving readability on small screens, while remaining elegant in large headlines.
Google says it decided to release the font to curtail a “fragmented typographic experience across the digital ecosystem,” which happens when various platforms don’t have the same consistent font across their products. So, going open source, Google says, is mainly “about fostering a more consistent and polished digital environment for everyone.”
