Greenlanders created their own ‘MAGA’ hats, ‘Make America Go Away’
In Greenland and Denmark, red hats with a very different message have become a popular product.
Thousands of Greenlanders and Danish citizens are protesting Trump’s rhetoric to take the Arctic island hard, wearing mostly red caps, all expressing support for the island. The caps bear a similar slogan to the one Trump likes to mock, instead of “Make America Great Again” (MAGA), has a clear message: “Make America Go Away.”

The protests were fueled by Trump’s revived campaign rhetoric, which echoed his 2019 offer to buy Greenland. At the time, both Denmark and Greenland rejected the idea. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has long stressed that its future is not up for negotiation.
The hats are part of a broader cultural response to the “Hands off Greenland” movement. Demonstrations in both Denmark and Greenland have drawn large crowds, and European governments have publicly supported Denmark’s position that Greenland’s status is not up for negotiation.
The show hats became the most visible symbol of that resistance. Some of them were created in Copenhagen by vintage shop owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who said the goal was to show solidarity with Greenlanders while mocking what many saw as aggressive rhetoric. The design deliberately copied the look of the original MAGA hat, using bold white letters on red fabric to make the message immediately legible.
Another version, presented by the group Greenland Support, promises to donate all proceeds to a Greenlandic children’s charity.

Buyers also came from outside Scandinavia, including the United States, where the irony did not go unnoticed.
