‘Huawei’ launches ultra-thin ‘Mate 70 Air’ phone
The Huawei "Mate 70 Air" has a 7-inch display, stereo speakers, and a large 6,500mAh battery.
Huawei Technologies Co. has added a new ultra-thin phone to its lineup, the Chinese tech giant’s most direct response to Apple Inc.’s iPhone Air.
The new “Huawei Mate 70 Air” is 6.6mm thick and costs 4,199 yuan ($590). That’s significantly cheaper than the $999 iPhone Air, but it’s no match for an ultra-thin phone. Apple first introduced the Air brand to its smartphone lineup when the new phone was introduced alongside the iPhone 17 generation this fall, and Huawei is openly opposing it by choosing the same name.

The Mate 70 Air manages that big battery in part thanks to an unusually large 7-inch screen, so it’s still a big phone. It’s also odd in offering a choice of two processors: buyers happy with 12GB of RAM will get the Kirin 9020B chip, while upgrading to 16GB bumps you up to a Kirin 9020A – though both are simply downclocked versions of the regular Kirin 9020.

There are four rear cameras, including what the company refers to as a “primary color camera” designed for maximum quality in night and other low-light conditions., including a 12-megapixel telephoto, is also a boon for a phone this thin. The front camera is a punch hole design, just like the Motorola.
Mate 70 Air uses a 6500mAh ultra-thin silicon-carbon anode battery for the exceptional battery life. Huawei claims 50 hours of battery life, around twice that of the iPhone Air.
And instead of trying to take on Apple’s top-tier device, its Mate 70 Air is targeted at the more design-conscious demographic that the iPhone Air would appeal to.
It’s your choice whether you want a device that’s just thin – or a powerful and thin model.
