Kohler has introduced “Dekoda”, a health tracker that you attach to your toilet. It’s designed to peer down into the toilet using sensors and analyze what it sees, using algorithms to gain insights into your hydration, gut health, and discreetly notify you when it detects blood, which could indicate more serious health issues.

The $599 Dekoda clips onto the rim like a toilet bowl cleaner, aiming an optical sensor at your stool and secretions. It then analyzes the images to detect blood, as well as analyze your gut health and hydration status. Subscription fees range from $70 to $156 per year, depending on the plan you choose.
Before you go to the bathroom, you log in via a fingerprint sensor so the device knows who’s using the facility. (Wash your hands before logging out or tracking your progress.) Then, you can view your daily analysis and trends over time in the app. But wait until you’ve sobered up before you start scrolling through your health data. The device has a removable, rechargeable battery and a USB port.

Kohler says your data is protected by the aforementioned fingerprint scanner, end-to-end encryption, and notes that the camera uses “discreet optics,” looking only at the results, not at parts of your body.
“Dekoda’s sensors see down into your toilet and nowhere else,” the company says.
Dekoda’s multi-day data, shared through the Kohler Health app, can help you understand when you should drink more water or how dietary changes could improve digestion or nutrient absorption.

While the system can’t provide detailed information about the origin of blood in your stool, it can help ensure that a potentially serious symptom doesn’t go unnoticed so you can see a doctor for evaluation and treatment as soon as possible.
