The original “Lord of the Rings” cumulatively grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide and won 17 Academy Awards.
Warner Bros. has announced that “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
Along with the release date, the company released a short trailer and confirmed the cast. Gollum will be played by Andy Serkis, who is also working on the project as a director.
The film also stars Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Elijah Wood (Frodo), with other actors including Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, Leo Woodall and Lee Pace.
Separately, it has been confirmed that Jamie Dornan will join the cast as Aragorn. The trailer reveals the character as Wanderer, his nickname before his true identity was revealed. The role was played by Viggo Mortensen in the previous films.
The events of the film will focus on the character of Gollum and expand on the story that ran parallel to the main trilogy.
This project is part of a new wave of films based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s universe that Warner Bros. is working on in conjunction with New Line Cinema.
