Michael Jackson biopic has had the best start of the year
The film "Michael" could become a record-breaker among musical biopics, grossing up to $150 million at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend.
Despite low ratings (just 39% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the biopic “Michael” is performing well at the box office. Journalists criticized the film for its convoluted plot and weak character development, but this didn’t deter audiences – the film posted the best opening weekend of the year.

The film earned $12.6 million in North American previews alone. Its global gross is expected to reach $140–150 million in its opening weekend. If projections come true, “Michael” will break box office records set by such hits as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Straight Outta Compton.”
The film cost $170 million to produce. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the lead role was played by the King of Pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson (who received praise for his acting and dancing).
Lionsgate is already considering a sequel if it becomes a success in theaters.
