Musk’s prediction: AI sunset on Earth, a few months away
Musk says AI systems could be deployed into space within 36 months.
SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a shocking prediction about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) on Earth in a recent podcast with author and content creator Dwarkesh Patel. According to the billionaire, the only way to ensure the further development of AI is through radical solutions.

The future of AI – in space?
AI relies on a vast infrastructure of databases and servers that require enormous amounts of energy to operate. Some experts are already warning of growing market pressure, with rapidly rising demand from AI companies driving up RAM prices.
According to Musk, the main challenge in developing AI is the need for energy. Yesterday, on the Dwarkesh Podcast, the billionaire said that the only way to ensure sufficient power for AI systems is to move them into space. According to him, the implementation of this plan may be just a few months away.
“My prediction is that within 36 months or even sooner, the cheapest place for AI systems will be in space, maybe as soon as 30 months. Mark my words,” Musk said.
He bases this prediction on the fact that the energy demand for the development of AI on Earth is becoming difficult to satisfy.
“The US currently uses about half a terawatt of power on average. Imagine if you had to build enough power plants to double that amount – people don’t realize how complex that is,” Musk said.
According to the billionaire, only in space can the necessary scale of AI systems be achieved. He also predicts that the development of AI systems in space will be extremely rapid: “Every year we will launch and operate more AI into space than all the AI accumulated on Earth so far.”
Criticism and challenges of AI
In addition to the enormous amount of energy, the development of AI also poses other challenges. For example, many people point out the huge load on electrical networks and the huge amounts of water needed to cool servers. Generative AI is particularly criticized, as skeptics argue that it works only by recycling and replicating the work of human creators.
Meanwhile, Musk’s AI chatbot Grok recently sparked outrage after users encouraged it to digitally “undress” images of women and children. Grok has also faced backlash in the past for its controversial actions.
As investors continue to pour billions of dollars into AI development, it remains to be seen whether Musk’s prediction will come true.
