Nike has unveiled a new innovation called Project Amplify, a robotically powered running and walking footwear system. It looks cool, but you might have to wait until you can try it out for yourself.

The system consists of a motor, a drive belt, and a rechargeable battery in a sleeve, all integrated into a carbon-fiber-covered running shoe. According to Nike, Project Amplify is designed to enhance natural movement in the lower leg and ankle.
Together, the system is engineered to mimic natural lower-leg and ankle movements, and it could be considered “a second set of calf muscles,” – Nike says.

Nike created Project Amplify alongside robotics partner Dephy. It’s still in the testing stage, but Nike plans to launch the footwear system to consumers broadly “in the coming years.”
Nike compares Project Amplify to electric bikes. Just as electric bikes help urban cyclists cover greater distances than a traditional bike, these shoes will help slower runners, joggers, and walkers push their usual limits. The company adds that the shoes can help users reach running speeds of nearly 10 to 12 minutes per mile.

Nike did not reveal when the product would be available, but said that more than 400 athletes have tested it over the past few years.
Project Amplify is one of four products Nike is launching this week. The others include an Aero-FIT jersey designed to withstand warm outdoor conditions and a new set of shoes based on neuroscience that helps “athletes capture their mindset before and after competition.”
