OpenAI and Jony Ive’s AI device will be released in 2027, with a new name
The device was originally to be called "io" and was scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026.
The release of OpenAI and Jony Ive’s mysterious, little-known artificial intelligence device has been delayed. According to new court documents obtained by Wired, the device won’t be released until February 2027.

The same documents state that the project’s name will be changed from “io” to something else. The reason for this is a trademark dispute with “iyO”, a company that produces audio equipment.
“In a statement, Peter Welinder, OpenAI’s vice president and general manager, said the company had reviewed its product naming strategy and “decided not to use the name io (or IYO, or any other capitalization of these words).”
The joint project between OpenAI and Jony Ive has been known since May 2025. In January, OpenAI confirmed that the release of the artificial intelligence device is planned for late 2026, although the commercial launch may be delayed until 2027.
Earlier in 2026, the company announced that it was working with Jony Ive to develop an AI pen-like gadget, but full details are unknown.
