PayPal just announced that you will be able to use its wallet to make purchases directly through ChatGPT, likely starting in 2026.
The recently added ChatGPT instant checkout feature will allow you to pay with PayPal using the same interface you already see when paying with PayPal through other services.
You will have access to all of your usual payment methods in your PayPal account, and you will be able to view your shipping and contact information.

Customers can use their PayPal wallets for payments, which the company says will allow it to protect both the buyer and seller, as well as resolve disputes. The company also provides technology to process card payments from ChatGPT using a separate payments API.
The partnership comes just a month after OpenAI introduced a “Buy Now” button to ChatGPT and introduced an instant checkout feature, which was initially only available on “Etsy” and “Shopify” but later expanded to Walmart.
Using OpenAI’s agent commerce protocol not only simplifies the buyer experience, but also automatically adds products from companies that support PayPal as an option to ChatGPT’s e-commerce setup without requiring them to sign up separately.
Next year, merchants using PayPal products will be able to find them on ChatGPT, starting with categories like apparel, fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics. Merchants won’t need to build any integrations, as PayPal will handle merchant referrals and payments behind the scenes.

PayPal is working to become a payments partner for AI-powered shopping experiences for a variety of companies, especially as people increasingly use AI apps to complete their daily tasks.
In May, the company partnered with Perplexity to let users pay for purchases on an AI search tool, and in September, PayPal announced it was implementing Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to integrate its products into various Google products.
With more purchasing options on ChatGPT, it will be easier for users to shop across the OpenAI ecosystem, including the new Atlas browser and the rumored consumer hardware device that OpenAI is developing with Jony Ive. Turning ChatGPT agents into AI personal shoppers will give users more ways to use the chatbot and could open up new revenue streams for OpenAI.
