This was an exceptional assignment that was approached and Backbar Studios was delighted to accept. The confectionery brand’s inspiring craftsmanship and whimsy is the ultimate packaging design story – grounded in imagination, touch and pleasure. It is a space where storytelling and sensory experience intersect, created for the big kid in each of us.

Sugar Plum Sweetery from Mullingar has quickly become a popular and beloved name in the Irish confectionery world. The brand, directly inspired by the magic of the shop owner’s chocolate factory and their own whimsical inventions – a modern-day Willy Wonka, if you will – is built on a foundation of joy, experimentation and craftsmanship.
Backbar Studios were tasked with developing the existing brand identity, strengthening the overall identity and infusing it with new charm and nostalgia, whilst ensuring it remained commercially viable and instantly recognizable.

Backbar Studios’ solution is a timeless and contemporary identity that allows the brand to grow while remaining true to its roots. It’s a system that fits happily in Sugar Plum Sweetery’s stores – Mullingar, Kildare Village and even online – and seamlessly transitions to the shelves of “Brown Thomas”, “Arnotts”, “Kilkenny Design” and “Avoca” grocery stores.


The brand name is adorned with bespoke typography, giving it an unmistakable character and sense of ownership. Its old-world charm evokes simpler times and simple pleasures, evoking nostalgia while remaining refined and luxurious. The result is an immersive sensory moment that celebrates craftsmanship, evokes memories and invites customers into the magical world of “Sugar Plum Sweetery”.
