An unusual ceremony took place at the Jogyesa Temple in Seoul: the Unitree G1 robot was ordained as a monk according to all Buddhist traditions.

The robot was named Gabi (“mercy” in Korean) and asked to recite five traditional religious oaths. It swore to respect life, not harm other robots, obey humans, refrain from deception, and conserve energy.
During the ceremony, Gabi participated in traditional purification rituals by wearing a 108-bead necklace and attaching a patch to his hand, replacing the small burns to the skin that are part of local practices.
The ceremony’s organizers noted that the ritual reflects people’s desire to coexist with machines in cultural and spiritual senses.
