Review of the year 2025

It’s Nice That writes:
This year, creativity took two distinct, divergent paths. We saw work that pushed boundaries of tech innovation, with a host of intriguing and inventive digital projects making it into our top slots. But – as always – this technological advancement was met with fervent analogue creativity, with a handful of our most read articles going to artists who’ve developed a daily practice of putting pen (or paintbrush) to paper.

What would it take to convince a Neuroscientist that an AI is conscious?

Gizmodo writes:
Large language models like ChatGPT are designed to be eerily human-like. The more you engage with these AIs, the easier it is to convince yourself that they’re conscious, just like you.
But are you really conscious? I’m sure it feels like you are, but how do you actually know? What does it mean to be conscious, anyway? Neuroscientists have been working to answer these questions for decades, and still haven’t developed a single, universally accepted definition – let alone a way to test for it.

Why 2025’s best rebrands mostly happened while we weren’t looking

Creative Boom writes:
2025’s been a bit of a weird year, hasn’t it? For instance, I’ve spent the past 12 months watching brands flail, fumble and occasionally nail it. But now it’s time to sum up the period, it strikes me that the most consequential rebrands of the year were the ones nobody was actually talking about on social media.
Why texture matters in graphic design, and how to use it right

Design Work Life writes:
Tactile experiences engage multiple senses and are more memorable than visual designs alone. You can close your eyes and imagine the feel of a book in your hands, the rough texture of a cloth cover and the crisp linen feel of the interior pages. The contrast between smooth, rough and bumpy surfaces keeps designers trying new things and seeing what works with a particular target audience.
How 2026 will finally kill photorealism

Creative Bloq writes:
Photorealism is the art world’s version of a magic trick. You’re meant to stand in front of the canvas and say, “Wait – that’s not a photo?” At its core, it’s about using photographs as source material, then reproducing them in paint, pencil or other media with such obsessive precision that they read as high‑res photography from a distance.
‘South Park’ writer launches parody Trump Kennedy Center website with official names months after anticipating rebrand

Design Taxi writes:
Toby Morton, a comedy writer best known for his work on South Park and MADtv, had been watching developments around the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for months. By August, he had registered trumpkennedycenter.org and trumpkennedycenter.com, convinced the institution would eventually be rebranded to include President Donald Trump’s name.
Design Constraints: types, examples & common misconceptions

Leo is electronics brand Loewe’s first over-ear headphones

Design-Milk writes:
Leo is a premium set of over-ear headphones launched by Loewe, the German electronics brand (not to be confused with the Spanish fashion house) behind some of the most innovative TVs of the 20th century.

A real(?) T800 in action.
One example from EngineAI had so many people convinced of CGI fakery that the Chinese robotics company released “BTS footage” and a video of its CEO being kicked by the robot to prove it’s real. I’m entertained, but unconvinced.
